Learning outcomes

The session programme for 2018 is as follows:

Session 1: Technique for Each Paper + Question Contexts

After a theories & models-fuelled warm-up quiz we dive straight into the challenges posed by the three AQA Papers. We explore how students performed in 2017, where they dropped marks and how 2018 candidates can learn and benefit. Then we move on to the crucial skill of application and explore how to ensure that responses in each paper are in context.

Session 2: Analysis & Evaluation - Where and How?

We start this session by looking at the need for students to first to unpick the demands of each question and plan responses that meet those demands. The skills of being selective in choosing and developing relevant arguments is illustrated, as are techniques for improving the depth and quality of arguments through logical chains of reasoning (in context of course!). We finish by considering the meaning of evaluation and how to demonstrate it credibly in responses that require AO4.

Session 3: Succeed in Longer Mark Questions

Students struggled with the extended writing questions in June 2017, on average picking up just half (57) of the marks available (114) for questions with allocations of 20 marks and above. This session builds on the techniques explained in sessions 1&2 to introduce possible structures that students can use to tackle the big mark questions, in particular the 25 markers in Paper 1. We also consider how (if they choose to do so) students can evaluate throughout, as well as writing a focused, balanced conclusion that fully addresses the demands of the question.

Afternoon Session: Nailing the Numbers and Models (Every Mark Matters)

A fast-paced, intensive and highly-interactive afternoon session focuses on two crucial areas to maximising marks in June 2018 - quantitative skills and making use of relevant models and theories.
